Nigeria moved to mop-up excess paddy Rice in the market, this was presented by the Acting Director, Food and Strategic Reserve Department, Engr. M .O .Adewoye in the Senior Staff Technical meeting held in the department

          He added that the proposal for approval for the mop-up will be conveyed to the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for onward presentation to Mr. President, President Muhammadu  Buhari for final approval.

Management of Stored Commodities

One of the major statutory functions of SGR department is to procure, safeguard and release grains/food commodities to government in times of emergency and the Engr Adewoye led department justified the confidence reposed in it as it lived up to expectations in 2015 in the following ways:
Grain Procurement
To ensure availability of grains, a proposal has been send to Permanent Secretary to procure thousands of metric tonnes of assorted food commodities and Paddy Rice from dry season farmers under Guaranteed Minimum Price (GMP) programme for 2014 procurement season.

In order to consolidate on the progress and gains achieved so far through the transformation of the agricultural sector of the economy, the ministry signed a MoU with African Exchange (AFEX) to start a pilot-phase of the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS). Seven out of forty-eight units of the completed 2,000MT-Capacity community warehouses were selected for the pilot-phase of the WRS and has been in operation since December, 2013 and January, 2014.
